Best Video Size and Format for Discord Uploads

Discord caps attachment size on most plans. Compress locally, pick the right resolution, and avoid unnecessary re-upload failures.

Know the limits first

Free Discord accounts allow smaller uploads than Nitro. Always check your current plan limit before exporting a long clip.

Recommended export settings

720p or 1080p H.264 MP4 with AAC audio is the safest combination. Very high bitrates rarely help in chat playback and inflate file size.

When WebM helps

Some clips shrink further as WebM. If MP4 is still too large after compression, try MP4 to WebM conversion and re-check the size.

Compress with a target size

Use a Discord-focused compressor that estimates output size. Iterate quality until you are safely under the limit with headroom for metadata overhead — start with compress video for Discord online.

General compression first

For non-Discord sharing, the same workflow applies with the general video compressor. Dial quality until the estimate fits your destination.

Short clips beat huge files

Trim highlights instead of uploading entire recordings. Discord is optimized for short messages, not archival video.

Before you upload

Play the compressed file locally once. If motion looks blocky, raise quality slightly or reduce resolution instead of bitrate alone, then re-run Discord compression.
